The Italian tactician was initially lauded for the work he had done since his arrival, replacing Nuno Espirito Santo mid-season and steering his side to a top four finish.

But as expectations rose with what seemed like a brilliant transfer window from the club by many, the team simply did not, going trophyless for yet another campaign.

After getting the sack as Tottenham manager, Antonio Conte sent a message to the fans on Instagram.

“Football is passion. I would like to deeply thank everyone at Spurs who appreciated and shared my passion, and my intense way of living football as a coach.”

“A special thought to the fans who always showed me support and appreciation, it’s been unforgettable to hear them singing my name. Our journey together has ended, I wish you all the best for the future. Antonio.”

The Antonio Conte era will cause a split amongst fans for years to come

Ultimately, how Conte will viewed by the supporters could depend on the success of the next manager.

If he performs, several Tottenham fans may likely to look back on the Antonio Conte era as one where he underperformed and if he does not, the Instagram message will be looked back with sadness about his sack, as he was clearly passionate about the job.

Whatever said and done, the reaction from the ex-Inter Milan coach was classy and honest.
