Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has sent a touching six-word Instagram message to Manchester United star Christian Eriksen – after the two reunited at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, a result that saw United win 2-0.

Eriksen, 30, returned from injury after missing Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Newcastle United. He was back on the bench against his old club Spurs, and indeed, his old manager. Eriksen worked with Conte at Inter Milan.

The Denmark international came on for the last few minutes as Fred and Bruno Fernandes got the goals on Wednesday night. A superb win for United as Erik ten Hag continues to impress as Old Trafford boss. For Spurs, a poor result.

Tottenham’s inability to lay a glove on other top-six opponents continues. But Tottenham boss Conte put aside his frustration with the result against United. He sent a nice message to Eriksen, saying “happy to have seen you again”.

Of course, it could have been very different. Tottenham were strongly linked with the £228,000-a-week Manchester United star. Even Conte spoke recently about he would like to work with Eriksen at some point in the future.

Unfortunately, that has not been at Tottenham. But with Conte now using Yves Bissouma at the base of his midfield and Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg ahead of Bissouma, there might be room for an attacking midfielder.

Eriksen might have fitted into Tottenham and Conte’s system, then. But it was not to be and the ex-Ajax man is now impressing at Old Trafford. Despite choosing United over Spurs, it is clear that Conte is still very fond of Eriksen.

Spurs are next in action on Sunday against Newcastle on home soil. Meanwhile, Manchester United travel to London to take on Chelsea in what will be Graham Potter’s biggest test of his short Blues spell.
