Antonio Conte has told Monday night’s press conference – as per Football London – that Tottenham striker Harry Kane has been playing with a fever of late, after the England skipper scored the only goal of the game to beat Fulham 1-0.

It was Kane, 29, who produced the only bit of magic in a close encounter at Craven Cottage. Fulham started well without seriously testing Hugo Lloris. Spurs grew as the game went on and it was Kane that broke the deadlock.

Turning past USA defender Tim Ream after a neat pass from Son Heung-min, he curled a brilliant effort past Bernd Leno. Fulham dominated possession in the last 20 minutes, but failed to get an equaliser. A welcome win for Spurs.

It comes after a tricky week of reports regarding Conte’s future, and Spurs losing two games in a row to Arsenal and Manchester City. But, Spurs remain in fifth place and secure a win and a clean sheet. Conte spoke about Kane after.

“Today he was amazing. He scored a fantastic goal. The execution to control the ball and then kick it in that way. Only a world class striker can score that goal. I want to underline that Harry played with a fever,” Conte said, on Monday.

“He was not so good but he wanted to play because he understood the moment. He’s a point of reference for us, for me, for the other players. With Hugo, they are the two players who are our point of reference in the dressing room.”

For Kane to continue the way he has been playing while experiencing a fever is testament not only to the his work rate and commitment, but also his quality. His form has remained top – scoring five in seven games, after the World Cup.

Kane equalled Jimmy Greaves’ record as Tottenham’s all-time top goalscorer with 266 goals on Monday night. Not only that, but he took his tally to 16 League goals for the season – and 18 in all competitions. Kane continues to carry Spurs.
