Antonio Conte has told Tuesday’s press conference – as per Football London – ahead of Wednesday’s home game against Southampton that Son Heung-min is a “top, top player” that shows huge commitment behind the scenes.
Son, 29, has returned to action with Tottenham after a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring issue. He started, and last 68 minutes against Brighton, as Spurs went on to 3-1 in the fourth round of the FA Cup against the Seagulls.
This season, Son has had a hand in 14 goals – scoring nine and laying on five more assists in his 26 appearances. Against Brighton, he was unlucky not to get an assist for Kane’s second. He is available to face Southampton.
Conte spoke about Son and his return to the side after a few weeks on the sidelines. He raved about the South Korea skipper, saying his commitment in training is exlempary and that he is a “top, top player.”
“He’s fully fit. We’re talking about another important player for us. Sonny is a top, top player. His commitment during the games, and in training he is every time at the top. I’m very happy to have players like him,” Conte said.
Conte on Son: Tottenham star just as important as Kane
Not just because of his goals and assists. Son’s most-crucial asset to his game, especially under Antonio Conte, is his work rate and ability to start the press. Brighton gave the ball away in their own half so much on Sunday.
Son was crucial in that. The left-sided attacker recovered the ball time after time, either going for goal himself or setting up Kane. Even if his numbers are not at Kane’s level, he is just as important as the England skipper.
