Antonio Conte has told Thursday’s press conference – as per Football London – that he met with Christian Eriksen soon after the Dane joined Brentford. The playmaker is being linked with a return to Tottenham.

Eriksen, 30, made the sensational return to football when he joined Brentford in January. It came after the playmaker suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for his country at Euro 2020 in Copenhagen.

Since his return, he has played six times for Brentford – scoring against Chelsea in a 4-1 win, and then laying on two assists. He has returned to the Denmark fold too, scoring two goals in the most-recent international break.

Fabrizio Romano stated this week on his podcast that Tottenham are interested in Eriksen – but that Eriksen will wait until the end of the season to discuss his future with Brentford, out of loyalty. His deal ends in June.

Eriksen returns to Tottenham for the first time since he left the club to join Inter Milan, where he and Conte combined to win the Serie A title. Conte spoke about his return to Spurs – and the return of Eriksen to football.

“First of all, I’m very happy to see him, to play football again because the images were terrible for everybody. We suffered a lot for him and his family. I had the opportunity to meet him when he arrived at Brentford.

“I spoke to him and his family. We’re talking about not only an important player but a great man. I wish him and his family the best for the present and the future. To meet him tomorrow for a game will be a pleasure.

“It’s incredible because not many times have happened what happened and to see him play football, football is life and it’s great for him and his family because they’ve come back to having a normal life.”

Conte on Eriksen: How can Tottenham stop the Brentford man?

Brentford are in great form and a lot of that has to do with the form of Eriksen. He has knitted things together for the Bees, helping them win five of the six games he has been a part of. Spurs desperately need to win.

Arsenal ended their run of three straight defeats with a brilliant 4-2 victory away at Chelsea. The Gunners face a struggling Manchester United at home and a win is possible. Spurs must get back to winning ways.

Stopping Eriksen will be crucial to that, which will be down to the midfield of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur. Perhaps, Conte will use three midfielders – and include Harry Winks, who knows Eriksen well.
