Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte has told Football.London that the club wanted to sign Luis Diaz before he joined Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the January transfer window.

Colombia international winger Diaz moved Liverpool from FC Porto in January for £37 million (Sky Sports).

Tottenham were strongly linked with the 25-year-old at the time, and now head coach Conte has admitted that the North London club did try to sign Diaz.

Tottenham’s Antonio Conte on Liverpool’s Luis Diaz

Conte told Football.London: “We knew [Diaz] was a top player. I think Paratici tried to see the possibility to sign him, but in the same way, we signed Kulusevski and to see the capacity of this player to come into our team, like Rodrigo Bentancur. For us these two signings were very important because the team has improved in quality.

“When there is an important player, it is important to try to sign him because you know a top player will improve your team and the quality of your squad. If you want to win something, for sure you need players at the top, not medium level players.”

Big miss

In our opinion, Diaz is showing at Liverpool what Tottenham are missing.

The Colombia international has been brilliant for the Reds and has established himself as a key figure in the team.

Already.

Diaz has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water, and his skills, quality, pace and work-rate are there for all to see.

The winger has scored three goals and given two assists in eight Premier League starts for Liverpool.

The Colombian has also scored two goals and provided one assist in three Champions League starts for the Reds.

Liverpool are more appealing than Tottenham at the moment, and we are not surprised that the Reds were able to get Diaz before Spurs in January.
