Antonio Conte has told Friday’s press conference – as per Football London – that Tottenham youngster Bryan Gil is showing similarities with Manchester City star Bernardo Silva, but lacks the strength of the Portugal international.
Gil, 21, has struggled at Tottenham. Joining the club from Sevilla last summer for a fee of £21.6million and Erik Lamela, he has failed to get going. But on Wednesday night, he came off the bench against Sporting Lisbon.
The talented Spaniard immediately provided Tottenham with a spark, that had been lacking for the entirety of the first half. He won the corner that saw Rodrigo Bentancur score from. Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison remain out.
So, against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, Gil is in line to start – with Lucas Moura still not 100%. Something the Brazilian admits himself. Asked about Gil on Friday, Conte compared Gil to that of £150k-a-week City ace Silva.
If I have to compare Gil with someone, maybe I can see him like Bernardo Silva at City. For me in this moment physically he is not strong but we are talking about this type of player. I have seen good improvement,” Conte said.

A huge compliment for Gil. Silva is a player that has proven time, and time again, that he is one of the best – though underrated – players in the Premier League. A constant source of goals, assists, endeavour and utter, sheer quality.
Gil does have similar qualities. He can play anywhere behind the striker, even as a 10. He has that creative knack from out wide, something Spurs have lacked with Kulusevski still sidelined. Gil should be given a go on Saturday.
Whether Conte is willing to throw Gil in at the deep end, albeit against Bournemouth, is another story. With Kulusevski and Richarlison out, as well as Lucas’ fitness issues, a game against the Cherries – Gil should start.
