Antonio Conte has told Monday’s press conference – as per Football London – that Dane Scarlett is the best player in Tottenham’s academy right now. Scarlett could be involved against Middlesbrough on Tuesday evening.
Scarlett, 17, has played nine times for Tottenham’s senior side and while he is yet to score – he could feature for a tenth outing against Boro. Spurs and Chris Wilder’s side will be fighting for a place in the sixth round.
The likelihood is, is that Harry Kane will start up front with the FA Cup presenting Tottenham’s only remaining chance of silverware this season. They were knocked out of the Europa Conference League in the groups.
Conte handed Scarlett only the second Premier League appearance of his career on Saturday afternoon – during a 4-0 win over Leeds. He applauded the youngster, ahead of Tuesday night’s FA Cup game against Boro.
“I don’t give gifts to my players. Dane’s working really hard and he is a really good prospect from the academy – the best prospect from the academy. There are a couple of others who are improving,”
“Dane has to continue to work very hard, we are trying to find the best solution in the training because he has a long history with injuries, he has great potential, he is only 17. He deserves this opportunity.”
Conte on Scarlett: Tottenham star needs European football next term
Realistically, Tottenham need to keep Scarlett as they lack necessary cover in the form of a proper number nine – even though the striker probably needs a loan move elsewhere. What is key, then, is European competition.
Spurs need to qualify in Europe in order to increase their amount of games and give Scarlett the chance to play football. Top four looks unlikely, but the Europa League or Conference League hands Scarlett game time in Europe.
