Tottenham will be satisfied with a point against German side Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday night – and while Antonio Conte praised his players for their display in the 0-0 draw, he sent another message to Daniel Levy regarding transfers.

Conte was able to name the maximum 12 substitutes in Germany – but they lacked attackers. Indeed, of the 12 players, five were defenders, four midfielders, two goalkeepers and Bryan Gil. Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Moura are injured.

Spurs were unable to find a way through Frankfurt despite boasting 14% more possession than the Europa League winners. But it is a clean sheet and a solid point – especially, as Marseille won their first points by thumping Sporting.

Speaking in his press conference after the match, as per Football London, Conte explained that playing in the Champions League and the Premier League makes it difficult to rotate – you need a much bigger squad to compete.

“We have to take steps, be patient. If you compare Champions League with Europa League or Conference League, it’s completely different. Strongest XI, it makes it difficult to more changes. We know we need more transfer windows.

“Today I brought on Gil and he’s a young player. We have to become stronger as a squad. If we have the ambition and intention to play for these two big competitions, you lose players to injuries, you need a really, really big squad.”

Conte will have been delighted with Tottenham’s work in the summer, on the whole. They made eight signings in the summer – if you include Cristian Romero’s permanent move, and Destiny Udogie, who has returned to Udinese on loan.

But Conte needs more. He has already explained in the media that the club needs three more windows to get him to where he wants to take Spurs. The lack of attacking options was clear as day on Tuesday night.

Ryan Sessegnon can play further forward, as can Ivan Perisic. But injuries to Lucas and Kulusevski are big blows. Perhaps in January, Spurs will look to bring in a player that can play on either flank.
