Antonio Conte has told Monday’s press conference – as per Football London – that Matt Doherty’s attitude off the pitch has impressed the Tottenham manager. It comes after Doherty scores his first Spurs goal, against Leeds.
Doherty, 30, was handed his third start in six Premier League matches by Antonio Conte – with the gaffer unsure about Emerson Royal since arriving. The Ireland international finally scored his first goal for Spurs.
He opened the scoring for Spurs, finished superbly with his right foot first time – as Ryan Sessegnon squared to the ex-Wolves man. Not only did Doherty score, but he also laid on assist – feeding Dejan Kulusevski.
Spurs ended an up-and-down week, which included beating Manchester City and losing to Burnley, with a comfortable 4-0 win over Leeds. Ahead of Tuesday’s FA Cup clash against Middlesbrough, Conte praised Doherty.
“Doherty is another player that has improved. He has worked a lot. I like him because if he plays or if he doesn’t play he is committed. His attitude is always top,” Conte said, as per Football London.
“Doherty understands that he can be an important part of this team. With Emerson on the right, but Doherty can also play on the left. I was pleased to see him at this level,” Conte continued, reflecting on Saturday’s 4-0 win.
Conte on Doherty: Tottenham man to start against Middlesbrough?
While Emerson might be the natural rotation for Conte, Doherty’s experience against Championship clubs might be crucial come Tuesday night. Spurs will need to grind out a result, experience is key.
The likes of Doherty, Eric Dier, Ryan Sessegnon – who played in the Championship with Fulham, Harry Winks, all need to start. They understand the value of the FA Cup, and the test of a side like Boro.
