Antonio Conte has told his post-match press conference – as per Football London – that there is plenty of room for Tottenham defender Cristian Romero to improve. He scored for Spurs in their 2-0 win over Brighton.
Romero, 23, is a crucial part of Conte’s starting line-up. Since returning from a hamstring injury after Conte’s first Premier League game against Everton, Romero has started eight league games in a row for Tottenham.
Forming part of the defence alongside Eric Dier and Ben Davies – Romero was superb once again on Wednesday night. The Argentina defender inadvertently scored his first goal – flicking Dejan Kulusevski’s shot in.
Conte spoke about Romero after the Copa America winner netted his first goal, even if he did not mean it. He says that Romero has a lot to improve, but the defender has the potential to be able to reach the level Conte wants.
“He has room for a lot of improvement. He has to have the desire to continue to improve and ask from within himself much more. It’s down to him and for the manager to help him in a good way and a bad way.”

So, the thought of Romero – who is certainly one of Tottenham’s better performers of late – improving even further, is certainly exciting. A player that Conte believes can eventually move into the middle of his defence.
Conte obviously watched Romero impress for Atalanta last season while on loan from Juventus – in which Romero was named the Serie A defender of the season for 2020-21. Conte and Romero is a match made in heaven.
