Liverpool were beaten to the signing of somebody who ‘scared’ Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte on Saturday.

Earlier this week, Wolves pipped Jurgen Klopp’s outfit to the addition of £42 million signing Matheus Nunes.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, this is a player who was ‘definitely‘ on Liverpool’s radar – and the Tottenham boss has admitted he was wary of him on Saturday.

Nunes made his Premier League debut in the 1-0 defeat by Spurs in North London yesterday.

And Conte, speaking after the game, has admitted that he was worried by seeing him and Ruben Neves in the Wanderers’ starting lineup.

The Italian boss said via Team Talk: “If you see their starting eleven today you have to be a bit scared because Wolves with Neves and Nunes have one of the best midfields in the Premier League.”

Despite missing Nunes, there could still be hope for Liverpool next summer.

That’s because The Telegraph reported on Thursday that Wolves aren’t expecting to have him for longer than a year, indicating that people at Molineux expect him to light up the Premier League this season.

Birmingham Mail gave him a rating of 6.5 for his debut at Tottenham, labelling him ‘confident and classy’ in possession.

Beginning your career in English football away to an Antonio Conte outfit isn’t the easiest way to kick off your stint in the Premier League.

It was, however, a very decent debut and it’ll be fascinating to see how he fares going forward.
