Everton are in the market for a new left back this summer – and a former Toffee could yet return to Goodison Park.

Carlo Ancelotti has seen Leighton Baines hang up his boots, meaning Lucas Digne is lacking senior cover at left back.

Summer addition Niels Nkounkou could be one option, but he is just 19 and has little first-team experience, meaning Marcel Brands could look for another option.

Sky Sports now report that Everton want to re-sign Wigan Athletic defender Antonee Robinson, just a year since Marcel Brands sold him.

Wigan have accepted a £2million bid from Sheffield United for Robinson, but Everton are now considering a late attempt to hijack his move.

That’s a similar price to the fee Everton sold Robinson for last summer, and the speedy American could now make a swift return to Merseyside.

Now, the Liverpool Echo carry quotes from Robinson in which he states that he appreciates how Everton were honest with him about his first-team chances before selling him.

Robinson seemingly holds no ill feeling towards the Toffees, and with Baines out of the picture, a return to Goodison Park really can’t be ruled out.

“Not one regret, no,” said Robinson. “Everton were always really honest with me. They just said, ‘We’ve got rid of a few players but we definitely need to keep Bainesy. We can’t get rid of Jags, the captain, and lose Baines as well. It’s getting rid of so much of Everton in the changing room and he’s such a good player as well still. We’ve got him and Digne starts for us so you have to wait for two injuries to start so you’re not even making the bench at the minute so we think it’s best for you if you just leave. It’s nothing to do with you, it’s just you need to play.’”

“I am really thankful they were that upfront and honest with me because it gave me the chance to go away and progress elsewhere,” he added.
