Everton’s Lucas Digne has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur.
Last month, the Daily Star reported that Tottenham Hotspur were keen on Everton’s Lucas Digne, with Danny Rose potentially going in the opposite direction.
Fans would have been forgiven for immediately writing that one off as complete nonsense, with Digne just one year removed from joining Everton and Rose hardly fitting Marcel Brands’ recruitment strategy.
Now though, in the aftermath of Tottenham’s Champions League final defeat, the links to Digne are remarkably re-emerging, with French newspaper L’Equipe claiming he’s wanted by Mauricio Pochettino.
Spurs are expected to bring in a left back this summer, and Digne certainly fits the bill having impressed in the Premier League with his attacking play, whilst he also has ‘big club’ experience with Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.
The 25-year-old ticks the boxes for Spurs, but Everton would surely face a major backlash if they sold the French international defender to Tottenham this summer, even if Rose is included.
Everton are hoping to get into the top six themselves, and selling one of their key players after just a year at Goodison Park would send out entirely the wrong message to Toffees supporters.
Everton need to fight to keep their best players, such as Jordan Pickford, Idrissa Gueye, Richarlison and Digne – together at Goodison Park, rather than sell them quickly, and even if Spurs come calling, Everton have to stand firm and keep Digne for their own top six push next season.
