Jonjo Shelvey may be very lucky indeed to get another Newcastle chance after his latest slip-up.
Jonjo Shelvey has been in hot water before at Newcastle United, but his performances have demanded that he be given another chance on each occasion.
As a key man in the Championship last term, Shelvey was sent off against Nottingham Forest – the red card then rescinded – but was then suspended later on as a result of alleged comments during a game with Wolves.
Having returned to the team to lead Newcastle to promotion, the England international then again saw red with a foolish dismissal in the opening day defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Shelvey has forced his way back into the team since then, but his role has been somewhat reduced with Rafa Benitez seemingly reluctant to place too much faith in a man who has a tendency to let his side down.
And so it will be interesting to see what conclusions are drawn by the manager following Wednesday’s senseless red card against Everton.
The game was gone and referee Martin Atkinson was putting the whistle to his lips for a final time when Shelvey – on a booking – hacked down an opposition player to earn his marching orders.
Unsurprisingly, this did not go down well at St James’ Park and it seems the mood is finally shifting; Shelvey is proving himself to be a liability.
He may have talent, but he has collected more red cards this season than he has had outstanding games.
Newcastle fans are running out of patience with the midfielder and Shelvey may soon find that Benitez is, too. He is not a man to quickly forget such dismal failures.
