Paul Merson has picked Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier in his Premier League Team of the Season.

The £12 million (Sky Sports) man was an instant success when he joined Eddie Howe’s side in January but this season, his game has reached new heights.

So much so that Paul Merson clearly believes that Newcastle United skipper Kieran Trippier has been the best right-back in the Premier League — deserving of a spot in his Team of the Season.

With the Magpies sitting in third place in what has been a fairytale campaign for them, Trippier may well have been their best player.

Not only is the England international a nuisance going forward but defensively, he almost guarantees the opposition left-winger has an off day.

Paul Merson has clearly taken note of the completeness that has made Kieran Trippier so vital to Newcastle, as he joins Sven Botman in his Premier League Team of the Season.

“He has taken it to another level this season. He’s always had a great right foot but the time he spent at Atletico Madrid made him an even better defender.”

“And his leadership qualities on and off the pitch have been so important for Newcastle. He’s an unbelievable professional”, he told GiveMeSport.

HITC View: The Newcastle defender has been the best right-back in the league

While Reece James, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker are considered as the best in their positions in the league and possibly across the world, the 32-year-old has outdone them all this season.

Kieran Trippier has been utterly brilliant for Newcastle from the first whistle of the campaign whilst almost always being available for selection, making him an automatic selection in the side picked by Paul Merson.

The Bury-born defender is what the modern full-back should aspire to be as the incredible balance in his game must be a dream for Eddie Howe.
