Karl Darlow could be sold by Newcastle United in January – and Leeds fans would welcome the goalkeeper to Elland Road.

Karl Darlow may have been one of the star players as Newcastle United edged out Brighton to win the Championship title last season but that has done him few favours in the long-term on Tyneside.

The talented shot-stopper has not played a minute of Premier League football since The Magpies’ promotion with the solid Rob Elliot preferred between the sticks by manager Rafael Benitez.

And with The Sun reporting that Newcastle are now hoping to enhance their goalkeeping options with the £15 million-rated Real Sociedad star Geronimo Rulli, you wonder what the future holds for Darlow on Tyneside – if he has one at all.

The former Nottingham Forest ‘keeper looked to be on his way out of Tyneside in the summer and could even have made the short trip to North East rivals Middlesbrough.

The Chronicle reported in June that Newcastle were willing to sell Darlow to the Riverside club but rejected their initial £5 million offer. With Boro unwilling to up their bid, however, they instead landed Darren Randolph from West Ham for a lower fee of £4.5 million.

The arrival of Rulli, however, would push Darlow to third choice and surely out of the door in January. And if there’s one club who would surely welcome a new goalkeeper in the New Year, it’s Leeds United.

After all, Felix Wiedwald is not exactly in favour at Elland Road right now. The German arrived from Werder Bremen with a less than stellar reputation in the summer and Leeds fans now know all too well why he was seen as one of the shakiest keepers in the Bundesliga.

Wiedwald was dropped for Andy Lonergan after a 3-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the month and, in his first game since, the 27-year-old’s misplaced clearance gifted Kelechi Iheanacho a goal to set Leicester City on their way to a 3-1 win over Leeds in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.

If Darlow is available in January, Leeds fans will be begging the club to take a look.
