The Portuguese defender endured a challenging spell with West Ham United.
West Ham fans took to Twitter yesterday in reaction to shock reports linking their former flop signing Jose Fonte with a move to Barcelona in January.
According to Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo, the La Liga giants are lining up a move for the former Hammers centre-half, as their central defensive crisis continues to get worse, with Thomas Vermaelen and Samuel Umtiti ruled out with injuries.
Fonte, 34, joined West Ham from Southampton in January 2017, for a fee believed to be in the region of £8 million, but he failed to establish himself in east London.
The Portugal international looked well off the pace for West Ham, and was quickly shipped out to China in February of this year.
He returned to European football this summer, moving to Lille, but now Mundo Deportivo are reporting that he is a target for Barcelona.
