Mousa Dembele is out of contract at Tottenham Hotspur next summer.
According to The Sun, Dembele is set to leave Tottenham next summer when his current contract runs out.
The 31-year-old midfielder will reportedly not hold talks with the North London outfit over a new deal.
Former Tottenham midfielder Murphy has given his take on the situation, and is surprised that Dembele could be let go.
Murphy, though, has suggested that Harry Winks could set in for Belgium international Dembele.
“I’m really surprised that Tottenham are letting Dembele leave the club,” Murphy told Bwin.com when asked about Dembele’s future. “I know how much he has loved being at the club and how much he appreciates the fans.
“I think he has been a sensational player for Tottenham and I think he has been crucial to the success they’ve had over recent years.
“He has qualities that no-one else in that midfield has and it would be costly to replace him. Tottenham might be looking at Dembele as a player in his 30s who is becoming increasingly injury prone and think it is time to move on.
“I think Pochettino is looking at Winks who I think has the potential to be a top-quality player.”
Time to move on?
Dembele has been on the books of Tottenham since the summer of 2012 when he joined from Fulham for a transfer fee reported by The Sun to be worth £15 million.
The Belgian has been an important player for Spurs over the years, but in recent times the 31-year-old has had injury and fitness issues.
With Winks progressing well and playing brilliantly in big matches, maybe Tottenham need not worry about losing Dembele next summer.
