Sunderland currently have the worst home record in the Premier League.
Sunderland striker Victor Anichebe has told the club’s official website that they must make the Stadium of Light a fortress again to avoid relegation this season.
The Black Cats have made a disastrous start to the season, with just one win from their first 11 games of the season.
It means they are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table and six points from safety already.
Their home form has been particularly poor, having lost four and drawn one of their first five games at the Stadium of Light this season.
That is the worst record in the division and Anichebe has urged his teammates to turn that around and turn their home into a fortress sooner rather than later.
“We need to get our home form (better), we need to really make here a fortress,” he told the club’s official website.
“I’ve watched Sunderland in the past, and that’s how it is, a really difficult place to come to when the fans are really behind the team.”
This weekend presents Sunderland with the perfect opportunity to pick up their first home win as they host Hull City.
The Tigers have not had the best of starts to the season either and currently find themselves 18th in the table.
It means this clash is something of a relegation six-pointer, even at this early stage of the season, and Anichebe is hopeful he and his teammates can push on and secure the victory.
“Hull are fighting as well, they’re not in a great position either so it’s going to be a tough game,” he added.
“We have good momentum, they also have good momentum. They won a game last week (against Southampton) but we shouldn’t really think of them, we should think of ourselves, and hopefully we can train hard and be ready.”
