Nevertheless, Leeds United will continue to monitor the Swansea City winger, Daniel James.
Robbie Gotts is close to signing a new contract at Leeds United, according to the Whites’ managing director, Angus Kinnear.
Gotts’ existing deal is due to expire at the end of this season, allowing him to move on a free transfer – although Leeds would be due training compensation if the winger was to walk out of Elland Road.
But speaking to the BBC’s West Yorkshire Sport Daily show on Wednesday, Kinnear revealed the Championship should not have to worry about that.
And Gotts is not the only one who could be in line for a new contract.
“There’s a plan for everybody at the club at the moment,” said Kinnear. “The overarching principal was that we wanted people to focus on this season and then talk at the end of it about renewals.
“But nobody in the squad is, or should be, under any doubt of how valuable they are to the team and that we believe they’re part of the long-term vision. So it’s a formality in terms of agreeing the figures and signing the deal, versus whether they’re going to be here or not.
“I think Victor [Orta, the director of football] and Marcelo [Bielsa, the manager] have done a lot to reassure those players of where their future lies.
“But at the same time we have signed some of the younger players, and Robbie will be signing a new contract this week. He is a player with a really exciting future.”
Gotts, a versatile winger who can double up as a full-back, has appeared in several of Leeds’ recent matchday squads without yet making his senior debut.
But despite the teenager’s emergence, Leeds will continue to monitor another player in his position, Swansea City’s Daniel James, ahead of the summer transfer window.
James was denied a deadline day move to Elland Road by what Kinnear describes as ‘boardroom politics’ at the Liberty Stadium, and the Whites chief added: “We will definitely maintain an interest in him. He is a player that has now returned and is back committed to Swansea, but in the process was very excited by the prospect of joining Leeds United.
“And once you’ve invested so much time in identifying the right player it’s not something you give up on easily.”
James was back in Leeds with Swansea last night, suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of his potential future employers.
