Celtic are facing Premier League competition in the race to sign Manchester City goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

According to a report from The Sun over the weekend, Celtic are ready to rival Stoke City to sign Manchester City goalkeeper Angus Gunn on loan for next season.

Gunn has been brilliant out on loan with Norwich City this term and it appears that he is ready to make the step up, with Stoke hoping to offer top flight football, while the Hoops should be able to give the 22-year-old a chance in Europe.

If it is Celtic who manage to get a deal done, it would arguably be one of the finest pieces of business that Brendan Rodgers has pulled off during his time at Parkhead.

The goalkeeper has been a position that has proved problematic at times during Rodgers’ tenure. Craig Gordon was superb after being dropped last season but has not looked quite the same this term, while Dorus De Vries has had questions asked about his reliability since his arrival in 2016.

With both men coming towards the end of their careers, it is arguably important that Rodgers signs another stopper in the summer – and Gunn may be the best option out there.

The youngster looks destined for an incredibly bright future and it says a lot that many are not writing him off becoming Manchester City’s number one at some stage during his career, so Celtic would be pulling off a stunning piece of business getting him on loan next year.

And if he, at some stage, comes to the realisation that his path to the City first-team is too congested, then who is to say that he may not come onto the market for a permanent move in the future?

In an ideal world, Rodgers may want to get a young goalkeeper signed permanently at the end of the season. But with Gunn’s talent and potential, it may be worth making him the priority target this summer and hoping that that may give them a glimmer of pulling off something more long-term further down the line.
