Everton sit 10th in the Premier League table, eight points adrift of the top six.
Marco Silva has reacted angrily to a question about Everton finishing in the top six of the Premier League this season.
It wasn’t a very festive December for the Toffees who won only one of their seven games last month – a 5-1 win at Burnley.
Everton will look to get 2019 off to a flier by beating Leicester City at Goodison Park today, but a victory would still put Silva’s side – who sit 10th in the table – five points adrift of sixth-placed Manchester United.
The Portuguese manager and Director of Football Marcel Brands spent close to £100 million on transfers last summer, with £50 million addition of Richarlison representing the bulk of that.
But despite the outlay, Silva suggests that finishing outside the top six in the Premier League would not represent failure for him or his players.
“What I think and what is our goal, we as a club we didn’t say once that we would challenge for the top six,” he told The Liverpool Echo.
“I don’t know why you are asking me this, about what I want. It is not because of a lack of ambition, we have big ambition behind us as a club, but we have to be honest and we have to be fair and look at the other clubs for the budget they have as well.”
