Peter Crouch has revealed that Darwin Nunez might well be ‘fuming’ with manager Jurgen Klopp after being benched for Liverpool’s first Premier League encounter of the campaign.
Nunez scored in the Reds’ 2-2 draw at Fulham this afternoon as Klopp’s side kicked off their season in underwhelming fashion.
However, the Uruguay international, a record £85 million signing this summer, only came on early in the second half.
The Liverpool manager started with Roberto Firmino through the middle instead of the former Benfica hitman.
And Crouch, speaking to BT Sport, believes that Nunez – who had a blistering pre-season campaign – might well be livid with the Reds boss.
He said before the game: “The thing is you’re chomping at the bit. If you have a good pre-season you score goals,” he told BT Sport ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Fulham. “He got four in pre-season, one in the Community Shield, if I’m a striker I’m fuming, I’d be angry.”
Darwin Nunez goal
With a clever flick from a Mohamed Salah cross, Nunez equalised after Aleksandar Mitrovic headed the hosts into a 1-0 half-time lead.
The equaliser might well get chalked down as an own goal, but the Liverpool forward will certainly be claiming it.
Salah then drew level for the Reds once again after Mitrovic fired Marco Silva’s ahead from the penalty spot, after being fouled by Virgil van Dijk.
There’s no doubt that Nunez changed the game for Liverpool, who had been uncharacteristically flat when Firmino was up front, and the Uruguay international might well start their next game as a result.
