West Ham United held their Manchester counterparts to a draw on Sunday.
Angelo Ogbonna has told West Ham United’s official website that youngster Ashley Fletcher was “brilliant” in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Manchester United.
The Hammers bounced back from their bitterly disappointing 3-2 defeat at Spurs last time around by earning a good point away at Old Trafford yesterday evening.
Diafra Sakho nodded West Ham ahead inside two minutes, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic levelled up after 21 minutes and that proved to be the end of the goals.
Winning the point was a big positive in itself following the late capitulation at White Hart Lane, but the 21-year-old’s second-half performance threw up another reason to be cheerful.
Fletcher, who replaced Sakho on 66 minutes, posted a very promising cameo, and almost won it for West Ham at the death after weaving through a sea of bodies, but his effort was kept out by David De Gea in the final stages.
And the Italian defender has singled out his contribution, speaking to West Ham’s official website.
“Fletcher came on and was brialliant as well. We need to get our confidence back sometimes, but this is a good way to get it back.
“He got chances and maybe if he puts the ball in for us then today I’m talking about three points! But it’s OK – he’s still young and he is a good player.
“He can keep the ball and run in behind and he’s very good for us that we have a good lot of young players who can improve and help the team and we have to keep our feet on the ground and work hard and take it step-by-step.”
Fletcher joined West Ham from the Red Devils in the summer and has since made eight Premier League appearances for the Irons – seven from the bench.
