Angel di Maria has thanked Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero for the ‘cojones’ he showed during Argentina’s World Cup final win over France in Qatar on Sunday, as he posted on Instagram.

Only a number of weeks ago, Romero was starting Argentina’s 2-1 opening group game defeat to Saudi Arabia and being hooked off in the second half.

At that point, many repping Argentina would have been fearing the worst, but sometimes a lot of it is down to how you get back up from the canvas, rather than what you do when you are at the top of your game.

And Romero’s form was on the floor at the start of the tournament, yet rewind back to yesterday, and he was starting the biggest game of his career by helping Argentina secure World Cup glory in the most thrilling of World Cup matches.

Former Real Madrid star di Maria returned to the XI against the French, and he scored his side’s second goal, as he sent this message in the comments section of Romero’s IG post.

“Thank you for the cojones you have,” di Maria told Romero.

ROMERO AND ARGENTINA SURVIVE MBAPPE SCARE

Only one man will ever know what it’s like to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final and end up on the losing side – and it will probably remain like that for decades to come.

Before Kylian Mbappe could provide the biggest scare of Argentina’s lives, only Geoff Hurst had scored in a World Cup final when he helped England to glory in 1966.

That’s how long it has taken for someone to hit that milestone, but whilst Hurst was on the winning side, it truly is a unique feeling for Mbappe.
