Nick Montgomery has been appointed as Hibernian boss and has already praised Tottenham Hotspur’s Ange Postecoglou as an inspiration.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has been branded an ‘inspiration’ by new Hibernian boss Nick Montgomery.

Hibernian announced their new manager on Monday with Montgomery taking over from Lee Johnson following his sacking.

Montgomery heads to Easter Road having won the A-League title with Central Coast Mariners last season.

The Mariners have a low budget compared to many other clubs in the league and Montgomery has earned praise for developing the likes of Garang Kuol.

Montgomery may be familiar to some having racked up nearly 400 appearances for Sheffield United in his playing career.

The 41-year-old is now looking to continue his coaching ascent with Hibernian – and become another success story out of Australia.

Nick Montgomery hails Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou

Montgomery heads to Scotland after success in Australia just like Ange Postecoglou.

Celtic took a chance on Postecoglou in 2021 after impressing in charge of Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory, as well as in Japan with Yokohama F. Marinos.

Postecoglou took a less-than-conventional route to top-level management and Montgomery is now looking to follow in his footsteps.

Montgomery has told Sky Sports that he thinks Postecoglou has been simply ‘amazing’ in his career, including in the early stages with Tottenham Hotspur.

Montgomery noted that Postecoglou even messaged him after winning the A-League title, appreciating his success with Central Coast Mariners.

The Leeds-born coach believes Postecoglou is an inspiration not just to him but coached around the world due to his football ideology and his route to stardom.

“Ange has been amazing,” said Montgomery. “Everybody doubted him when he went to Celtic and you can see what he did there, he’s already doing that at Tottenham, what he did in Japan. I know Ange, he was one of the first to congratulate me after we won the competition because he knows winning the A-League is not easy, especially winning it with no marquee players, with the smallest budget and the youngest team, it’s something I’m really proud of and I don’t think anybody has done that before.”

“He’s an inspiration, he’s an inspiration for any coach around the world – not just Australian, but I think the fact he is Australian, and when you see his story of how he’s done it, yeah, I’ve got so much time and admiration for him,” he added.
