Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has heaped praise on new signing Guglielmo Vicario after arriving from Empoli.

Guglielmo Vicario has been hailed as ‘exceptional’ by Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs have jetted off to Australia as they kickstart their pre-season preparations.

Tottenham will meet West Ham United in Perth on Tuesday before heading on to Thailand and Singapore.

This is a great chance for Postecoglou to get really stuck into life as Tottenham boss having been appointed this summer.

Postecoglou will have the chance to have a deep look into his squad on this tour as he prepares for his first Premier League campaign.

That includes goalkeeper Vicario, who recently joined Spurs in a £17.2million deal from Serie A side Empoli.

Ange Postecoglou praises Guglielmo Vicario

New Tottenham boss Postecoglou has been speaking to the media this morning and has discussed Vicario’s arrival.

Speaking to Football London, Vicario admitted that he thinks Vicario is a simply ‘exceptional’ goalkeeper.

Postecoglou was asked whether he is seeking to sign another goalkeeper this summer.

Hugo Lloris has been excused from this tour to Asia as he seeks a transfer move away from Spurs whilst Fraser Forster is injured.

That leaves Vicario as the clear first-choice and not much real Premier League competition behind him as things stand.

Postecoglou isn’t worried though, praising Vicario for settling in quickly whilst admitting that his focus is on strengthening other positions over goalkeepers right now.

“So far, Fraser is not with us, he’s obviously recovering from his injury but it’s fair to say that Guglielmo Vicario has settled in really well with the group,” said Postecoglou. “He’s a good guy and an exceptional goalkeeper”

“At the moment I’m pretty comfortable. It’s fair to say that my interests are kind of elsewhere in terms of incoming goalkeepers at the moment,” he added.

Path clear for Vicario to shine at Tottenham

Vicario will want a fast start to life at Tottenham and won’t want to be sat kicking his heels on the bench like compatriot Pierluigi Gollini did at Spurs.

The 26-year-old enjoyed two superb seasons at Empoli and is now ready for the next step with Spurs.

This could have been an awkward tour for him if Lloris was on board.

Lloris has been a Tottenham mainstay for more than a decade, racking up nearly 450 appearances for the club.

Trying to establish himself as number one with Lloris lurking behind him would have been a difficult situation for all.

Tottenham have instead allowed Lloris to stay at home and target a move away from Spurs, freeing up Vicario to cement himself as Tottenham’s new number one.
