Steve Nicol thinks Sean Dyche’s Everton will sign Romelu Lukaku when he returns to Chelsea colours in the summer, as he told ESPN.

The 29-year-old is currently on-loan at Inter Milan, where he has one league goal to his name this season, after an injury-hit campaign.

Whilst Lukaku has been tipped to make that return to Goodison Park, those in Everton colours need to stay in the Premier League, first and foremost.

After selling Anthony Gordon during the winter transfer window, and then failing to bring in a single player, things are looking even bleaker for the Toffees and their recently-appointed boss.

Sitting in the Premier League’s relegation zone after 20 games, Dyche has a real fight on his hands, and even though Lukaku has struggled since his £98 million flopped transfer to Chelsea in 2021 (Sky Sports), Nicol feels he can no longer play for the elite teams.

That’s why the Liverpool legend thinks a club like Everton might just suit him.

“He’s going to be in the same boat as Tielemans,” said Nicol. “I don’t think any of the top teams, the teams that will be vying to win the Champions League or the Premier League. None of these sides are going to be interested in him.

“Again, you are looking at an AC Milan or Inter Milan right now. With the wages he is on, maybe that’s something they don’t want, either.

“A bit like Tielemans, then I’m not sure any of the big boys get him. He might end up where he was, what four or five years ago, with an Everton and being a big fish in a little pond. That’s what’s going to happen with Lukaku.”

LUKAKU LOVES A RETURN

The Belgium international has played for Chelsea twice, as well as Inter Milan, so that proves he loves and doesn’t mind returning to his former clubs.

Come the summer, if Dyche keeps the club in the Premier League, then it will be interesting to see what type of road they go down in the transfer market.

Whilst Everton fans would happily take Lukaku now, he’s the type of big-name player they don’t need, and instead, someone to come in with a low ceiling, less noise and a lower transfer fee, so Dyche can slowly work his magic and build from the bottom up.
