Sunderland’s development squad beat Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford yesterday.

Sunderland development squad manager Andy Welsh has praised the performances of Sebastian Larsson, Jan Kirchhoff and Lyden Gooch for the Black Cats’ under-23 side against Manchester United yesterday on the club’s official website.

Sunderland ran out 2-0 winners at Old Trafford on Monday evening, with Welsh being able to name a relatively experienced side in the contest.

Both Larsson and Kirchhoff played 90 minutes, as they stepped up their comebacks from injury, while Gooch was also handed some game-time.

And Welsh said: “We had an experienced team out against Man Utd with Lynden Gooch, Jan and Seb and they were excellent.”

Larsson has not featured for Sunderland’s first team at all this season, but he looked sharp yesterday.

The Swedish international fired Sunderland into the lead, before Kirchhoff added a second goal with a well placed finished.

The pair could now feature for Sunderland’s first-team in their next match, which comes against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.

Sunderland have won their last two matches and could move out of the relegation zone if they are able to pull off a shock victory on Merseyside.
