Brendan Rodgers played a big part in Celtic’s Scottish Premiership win prior to his controversial departure.
Andy Walker has hit out at Celtic fans for their ‘vitriol’ and lack of respect towards Brendan Rodgers after they secured the Scottish Premiership title on Saturday afternoon.
In February, Rodgers left Parkhead to join Premier League side Leicester City, a decision which didn’t sit well with the Celtic faithful.
Rodgers’ abrupt and unexpected departure saw Celtic re-appoint Neil Lennon as the manager and the Northern Irishman guided the team over the line in regards to winning the title.
Speaking to Sky Sports Football (04/05/2019 at 2:25 pm) moments after Celtic clinched the title, Walker, who was on commentary duty, made his feelings known towards the Celtic fans.
“You are right to highlight the credit that is due to Neil Lennon, he’s got them over the line,” Walker told Sky Sports Football. “But you can count me out of those that regard Brendan Rodgers as some sort of fraud.
“This is utterly unique what Celtic are doing just now. Eight trophies on the spin. Chance of a treble-treble. This is Brendan Rodgers team. It’s his players and it’s his style of play.
“I think instead at the vitriol that’s aimed towards him by some of the Celtic supporters. I think he deserves a bit of gratitude and maybe, more importantly, a bit of respect from the Celtic team. I doubt we’ll see a Celtic team win eight consecutive domestic trophies in a row, never mind eight titles in a row anytime soon.”
Prior to leaving the Glasgow giants, Rodgers had guided the club to a double-treble and had won the Scottish League Cup before he decided to leave.
Added with that, he had the Hoops in the driving seat in their race to win the Premiership title, not forgetting the fact that they were still in the Scottish Cup.
When Lennon took over, he simply kept things ticking and if he continues in his ways then he will guide them to a historic treble-treble.
Later on this month, Celtic will take on Hearts in the Scottish Cup final knowing a win will write the clubs name into the history books.
