Andy Walker believes that Scott Sinclair has looked nothing like the player that Celtic had for two years this season.
Andy Walker suggested on commentary during Sky Sports’ live coverage of Celtic’s win over Hearts (broadcast on 19/5 from 14:30) that Scott Sinclair has lost his sparkle and his level of performance has dropped significantly over this season.
Sinclair has had a mixed season for the Bhoys. Despite scoring 17 goals in all competitions, he has left the Parkhead faithful feeling underwhelmed at times and goes into next weekend’s Scottish Cup final looking for his first goal since February.
His form is in stark contract to his contribution during his first season in the Scottish Premiership, where he scored 25 goals in all competitions. And Walker has suggested that he is no longer the player that Celtic signed back in 2016.
“He’s just lost some of that sparkle, hasn’t he, Scott Sinclair. He was such a special player for a couple of seasons with Celtic. His level of performance has dropped off so much since then,” he told Sky Sports.
In fairness to Sinclair, 17 goals in a campaign where he has looked well short of his best is an outstanding return. It means that his overall record is still much better than a goal every three games.
It will be interesting to see what role he ends up having next season. He is the kind of player that the Celtic manager would probably like to have in the ranks, even if he is not a regular starter.
But there will also be some supporters who would want the club to cash in if the Hoops receive a good offer. He is 30 years of age, and some fans may be fearful that his steady decline may only continue if he sticks around.
