Celtic face newly-promoted Livingston, while Rangers go up against Aberdeen.
Brendan Rodgers’ side play host to newly-promoted Premiership side Livingston, who have appointed former Rangers striker Kenny Miller as their player manager for the 2018-19 campaign.
Rangers are in action a day after Celtic on Sunday, as they travel to Pittodrie for a difficult clash against Derek McInnes’ side in what is Steven Gerrard’s first league game in charge.
Walker believes Celtic will ease past Livi with a 2-0 win, and expects Miller’s side to be right in the thick of a relegation dogfight towards the end of the season. He also predicted a 2-2 draw between Rangers and Aberdeen, but praised one of Gerrard’s new signings – 24-year-old Connor Goldson.
“It’s very unlike Celtic to spend so much on one player but the £8m outlay on Odsonne Edouard, but he highlights the gulf in spending power between the Scottish champions and everyone else chasing them,” Walker said.
“If he stays fit, I expect Edouard to finish as the league’s top scorer.
“Conor Goldson is a truly remarkable story. After recovering from heart surgery at 24 to get the chance of signing for Rangers in what should prove to be a fascinating story under the guidance of Steven Gerrard.
“We know Rangers are capable of scoring goals, Goldson has the responsibility to improve the team defensively.”
Celtic have warmed up for their Scottish Premiership opener by drawing 0-0 in Norway with Rosenborg, and therefore booking their place in the third round of Champions league qualifying after a 3-1 first-leg win.
Rangers still have it all to do to reach the Europa League’s third round of qualifying, as they remain narrowly in the lead against NK Osijek thanks to a 1-0 win in Croatia. They play their second leg on Thursday night.
