Celtic suffered a disappointing defeat in the final Old Firm game of the season on Sunday.
Andy Walker suggested during Sky Sports’ coverage of Rangers’ win over Celtic (broadcast on 12/5 from 11:30) that he does not expect to see Oliver Burke or Jeremy Toljan play for the Hoops again after their disappointing displays in the Old Firm game on Sunday.
Neil Lennon’s men were beaten 2-0 at Ibrox. It was another hugely disappointing performance from the Bhoys at the home of their bitter rivals, with James Tavernier and Scott Arfield getting the goals for Steven Gerrard’s side.
Celtic’s one shot on target came from Burke after some superb work from Odsonne Edouard. The on-loan West Brom forward produced a tame effort that allowed Wes Foderingham to scamper across his line and push the ball to safety.
That moment summed up Burke’s performance, and Walker suggested that Toljan – who came on at half-time after Mikael Lustig sustained an injury right at the end of the first-half – was just as underwhelming, as he made a prediction about their Parkhead futures.
“I think there’s a couple of players here that you won’t see in a Celtic strip again,” he told Sky Sports. “I think Burke will be one, I think Toljan will be another. There’s going to be a number of changes in the playing staff and, of course, in the manager’s office.”
Both men are on loan until the end of the season, and it is difficult to see the Hoops making any move to try and keep either man beyond this summer.
Burke started well but has tailed off dramatically in recent months, while Toljan’s form has left many Celtic fans much more receptive to the idea of Lustig getting a new deal for next season. And plenty of supporters will be hoping that the board look at the mistakes of the most recent January window and look to put things right in the summer.
