Andy Halliday was exceptional as Glasgow Rangers ended their wait for an Old Firm win at Ibrox.

Andrew Halliday of Rangers celebrates at full time during the Ladbrookes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on December 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Andy Walker suggested while commentating on Rangers’ Old Firm win (broadcast on Sky Sports; 29/12 from 11:30) that Andy Halliday was terrific in the game – despite remaining unconvinced that Steven Gerrard picked the best left-back available to him at Ibrox.

The Gers picked up a stunning victory against Celtic. Ryan Jack scored the game’s only goal during the first-half, but Rangers dominated throughout and were unlucky not to win by a bigger margin.

One of the most impressive performances on the day came from Halliday. He set the tone with an impeccably-timed challenge on Olivier Ntcham during the early stages of the contest, and proved to be a constant threat for the Gers.

Former Hoops striker Walker suggested during the latter stages of the game that he still believed that Gerrard had left his best available option on the left-hand side of defence on the bench, but Halliday had done a fantastic job of justifying his selection.

Lee Wallace of Rangers during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox Stadium on August 6, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“I think Rangers’ best left-back is on the bench in Lee Wallace,” he told Sky Sports. “But Andy Halliday this afternoon has been terrific. He really has. His tackling, his passing in open play. His corners in the first-half were a real threat.”

Given how little Wallace has played this term, it would have been a major surprise if Gerrard had decided to hand him his first start of the season in such an important game.

Halliday has rarely let Gerrard down, and he has been an important player almost from the moment that the Englishman took the job in the summer.

And while some may have had their doubts about why Wallace has been left out so often this term, Halliday’s performance on Saturday silenced a lot of the 27-year-old’s critics and doubters as he was one of the best players on the pitch.
