Ex-Celtic striker Andy Walker has backed Rangers for promotion.
Former Celtic striker Andy Walker has told Sky Sports that he believes Rangers’ experience will help them earn promotion this season.
Rangers have had to settle for third place after a 2-2 draw against champions Hearts on Sunday, and whilst in most cirtcumstances that would be deemed as a good point, Rangers needed to win and squandered a 2-0 lead at Tynecastle as Hibernian took second place in the Scottish Championship.
That means Rangers now face a play-off against Queen of the South, and if they can come through that two-legged affair, they would then face Hibernian for the right to face the team in 11th place in the Premiership, which looks like being Motherwell.
It’s a tricky route back to the top flight for Rangers, but with just one defeat under Stuart McCall since his appointment in March, they will be confident of progressing.
Former Celtic striker Walker has now told Sky Sports that even though it’s a tough path back to the Premiership, Rangers have the experience to come through and ultimately, win promotion to the top flight for the first time since their demotion in 2012.
“Rangers lost two goals in the last 10 minutes at Tynecastle which was a blow. Lee McCulloch was on the bench but I am sure he will have a big part to play in the play-offs but having the likes of the excellent Darren McGregor in their defence will give then a big boost going into these games,” said Walker.
“Don’t be surprised if Queens surprise one or two people but having said that, surely Rangers have got the experience and the players to navigate their way through a two-legged match against Queen of the South and then they have got to play Hibernian; that’s going to be really tight and could go either way.”
“I think Rangers have got the players who can rise to the occasion and come through six games. It looks as though they will play against Motherwell. I think it is going to be a great battle but I see Rangers doing it,” he added.
With the likes of Cammy Bell, Marius Zaliukas, Lee McCulloch, Lee Wallace, Nicky Law and Kenny Miller, Rangers have plenty of experience ahead of the play-offs, whilst also possessing youthful energy with Andy Murdoch, Tom Walsh and Ryan Hardie – and manager McCall will be hoping that this blend will fire Rangers to promotion.
