Andy Walker has told Sky Sports that he believes a difference in ambition between the Celtic board and manager Brendan Rodgers could see the latter decide to leave Parkhead.

Celtic have had a disastrous week on and off the pitch, as Rodgers becomes frustrated with the club’s lack of backing in the transfer window. The club then lost their first Scottish Premiership fixture of the season to Hearts on Saturday.

The saga surrounding Dedryck Boyata’s future saw the Belgian claim he was injured and miss the clash against AEK Athens, before the Hoops lost to the Greek side and were subsequently knocked out of the Champions League.

Now, doubts are beginning to arise over Rodgers’ future, with some of the belief that Rodgers may become fed up with only Scottish football to play for. Walker believes a difference in ambition between board and Rodgers could see him leave.

“My guess is that Brendan is committed to Celtic,” Walker said. “You cannot get away from the air of negativity that surrounds Celtic at the moment. I think the biggest problem is, having won the last six trophies, he wants Celtic to kick on and be better in Europe.

“Against that, you’ve got a board that are happy with being a dominant force in Scottish football. I don’t think they’re interested in making Celtic a European force. In that sense, you’ve reached a glass ceiling.

“With that in mind, how long will Rodgers be happy with just being a dominant force in Scotland?”

The Hoops were without star striker and club-record signing Odsonne Edouard who sat out injured, while Boyata remained at home despite Rodgers confirming that he was fit after the 2-1 loss.

Celtic’s elimination from the Champions League sees them enter the Europa League play-off round, where they will face Suduva or Spartaks Jurmala. Lithuanian side Suduva are 1-0 up after the first leg after an away win in Latvia.
