Celtic recorded a comfortable win against Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.
Sky Sports pundit Andy Walker has been left perplexed at the reaction from Stephen Robinson following Motherwell’s controversial goal during their 4-1 defeat at Celtic on Sunday.
The Bhoys were leading the encounter 2-0 in the second half when the opposition opted to attack and score despite the home team expecting them to return the ball back to them following an injury to Ryan Christie.
Motherwell youngster, James Scott started it all off, with his manager referring to his £200-a-week salary as a reason behind his actions, as quoted by the Daily Record.
Speaking to the Football Centre on Sky Sports News (25/02/2019 at 11:25 am), Robinson’s comments did not sit well with former Premiership player Walker as he hit out at the senior man.
“Well, it was an extraordinary bit of gamesmanship,” Walker told Sky Sports News. “Cheating. Call it what you will. I know cheating happens most weeks in football, but this is taking it to a different level.
“It was extraordinary to hear the reaction of Stephen Robinson. I have no idea why he is bringing the young players salary, he’s on a couple of hundred a week, James Scott, but I have no idea what relevance that has.
“I was a bit surprised that some of the senior Motherwell players didn’t take control and realise that this was maybe pushing the boundaries too far.”
In the game itself, Scott Sinclair opened the scoring for the home team before Odsonne Edouard doubled his side’s lead as Celtic went into the break with a two-goal cushion.
That was when controversy struck and Gboly Ariyibi scored to the annoyance and anger of the home team and their supporters.
But Rodgers side, who have won all their Scottish Premiership matches since losing to Rangers at the end of 2018, made sure the points were in the bag when Edouard grabbed his second goal of the game and Olivier Burke netted in stoppage time.
As a result, the Glasgow club remain eight points clear of Rangers in the table despite their 5-0 win at Hamilton prior to Celtic’s clash on Sunday.
