Andy Walker believes one of Rangers ‘problems’ since promotion has been that they have ‘struggled to impose any game plan on Celtic’ ahead of the Old Firm fixture on Saturday at Ibrox.

The former Scottish Premiership striker claimed that Celtic ‘tend to turn up’ for these matches as Brendan Rodgers side currently hold a three-point lead over their rivals with a game in hand.

Celtic won the reverse fixture in September 1-0 and they have not been beaten by their near neighbours since their return to the top-flight.

But under Gerrard’s stewardship, the Gers look a completely different opposition as they have won 11 out of their 20 league matches under his reign and suffered only three defeats – the same as Celtic.

Ahead of the Old Firm derby, Sky Sports pundit Walker offered his thoughts on the match and explained what has been Rangers’ biggest issue in this fixture in recent seasons.

“If Rangers can get a victory tomorrow then we have a meaningful title race,” Walker told Sky Sports News on 28/12/2018 at 5:35 pm.

“And that’s going to be a tall order for Rangers because I have watched them play Celtic since they came back into the top-flight and they have struggled to impose any sort of game plan on Celtic, who have all the experience, who tend to turn up on the big occasion and that has been Rangers problem.”

Rangers come into this fixture having last suffered a defeat at the start of the month at home to third-placed Aberdeen, who were beaten 4-3 by Celtic on Boxing Day.

On that same day, the Gers were held to a 1-1 draw against Neil Lennon’s Hibernian as a win against Rodgers side will move them level on points with their rivals – Celtic currently have a better goal difference.
