Andy Townsend claims Arsenal defender Ben White “doesn’t convince you” when working as a co-commentator during the Premier League’s coverage of the Gunners’ 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners secured a brilliant win to strengthen their place at the top of the Premier League table on Sunday. Gabriel got the only goal of the game, latching on to a Bukayo Saka corner to toe a ball into the roof of the net on 63 minutes.

For Arsenal, a stunning win that shows everyone that they are a genuine Premier League title contender this season. They are not just a team looking to finish in the top four. The first-half of the campaign has gone superbly for Arsenal.

The identity is there, as are the players. Mikel Arteta is working wonders – but Townsend, an ex-Chelsea player who was on comms for the game, was critical of White. The makeshift right-back dragged a shot early on in the first half.

“He just doesn’t convince you does he, does Ben White, when he gets in and around the box, that he really fancies his chance. Pulls that shot wide,” Townsend said, as co-commentator on Premier League’s coverage of the game.

Townsend: Arsenal defender White doesn’t convince you

While he might be discussing White’s impact in the final third, the Arsenal defender has been superb this season. Remember, he might be versatile, but White has rarely been seen on the right of a back four in his career.

Centre-back, right of a back three, holding midfield – yes. But never as a right-back, beforehand. But he has taken the challenge with aplomb – keeping Takehiro Tomiyasu and Cedric Soares out of the side. World Cup?

The £93k-a-week ace certainly has a chance to be a squad player. The kind of player that is perfect for a World Cup or a major tournament, because he can cover a number of positions. England will also likely include Eric Dier.
