Andy Townsend said on talkSPORT (5:12pm, March 8, 2021) that he feels sorry for Liverpool defender Neco Williams.

The former Chelsea and Aston Villa midfielder said that he felt sorry for Williams while watching him in action for Liverpool against Fulham at Anfield at the weekend.

The 19-year-old right-back started the Premier League game, but the teenager’s performance left much to be desired.

The Wales international struggled with Ademola Lookman’s pace and direct running on his flank and could not make a huge impact when he went on the attack.

According to WhoScored, Williams took one shot, played two key passes, had a pass accuracy of 72.3%, won one header, took 81 touches, attempted one dribble, and made four tackles, two interceptions and one clearance.

Townsend said on talkSPORT (5:12pm, March 8, 2021): “I felt a little bit sorry for Neco Williams. I felt he deserved a bit more help from some of the other boys around him. Shaqiri doesn’t give you a lot going backwards, he doesn’t give you a lot going forward to be fair.”

Moving on

Williams has done relatively well when he has been called into action for Liverpool so far in his career, and the right-back will be a better player for his experience against Fulham.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the first-choice right-back at Liverpool and Williams will not get too many chances, but at 19, he has a lot of time to learn.
