Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend has predicted on Sky Sports that Christian Eriksen will leave Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2019.

According to The Times, talks over a new contract between Eriksen and Tottenham are at an impasse, and that the Denmark international attacking midfielder could be sold at the end of the season.

The report has also claimed that Spurs are looking at 22-year-old Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison as a potential replacement for the 26-year-old.

Townsend believes that Eriksen has decided that he will leave Tottenham in the summer of 2019, and he has suggested that Maddison is not ready to replace the former Ajax star yet.

Townsend said about Eriksen on Sky Sports: “I think the player has already decided that he is going to go. I think he is going to go.:

“I like James Maddison,” added Townsend. “I think he has come in and adapted very well to life in the Premier League.

“I know he has shown that he can finish, he is very good with his set plays, he is clever.

“Is he in Eriksen’s class or quality yet? No, he is a mile away from that. He has a lot to do before he could be even in the same breath as Christian Eriksen.”

Long-term replacement

Eriksen is one of the best and most creative players in the world, and replacing the Denmark international in the summer of 2019 will be a tough.

True, Maddison is very young and has only just started playing in the Premier League, but the Englishman is very talented and the potential to get better in the coming years.

Maddison has made 22 starts and one substitute appearance in the Premier League for Leicester so far this season, scoring five goals and providing four assists in the process, according to WhoScored.
