Andy Townsend comments on atmosphere at Aston Villa

Aston Villa will be searching for consistent form at Villa Park.

Pundit Andy Townsend has told BBC Radio Five Live that he hopes to see Aston Villa ‘get into a groove’ at Villa Park.

Villa hammered Norwich City 5-1 on Saturday afternoon, with Wesley grabbing two goals in a successful away trip for Dean Smith’s side.

That was just their second league win of the season, but such a convincing victory will give Smith and Villa fans renewed confidence of staying in the top flight.

After the international break, it’s Brighton and Hove Albion at home for Villa, and Smith will be hoping to spark some positive home form for his side.

They lost their first home game of the season at the hands of Bournemouth, and after beating Everton in a superb night at Villa Park, they then drew two home games in a row, to West Ham United and Burnley.

Brighton present Villa with a real chance to grab that second home win of the season, and former Villa defender Townsend is desperate to see the club pick up their home form.

Townsend was a Villa favourite in his playing days, and acknowledged that Villa Park is an ‘amazing’ place to play football when the crowd are on Villa’s side, and thinks home form is massively important to Villa’s prospects this season.

Townsend did though note that Villa have an issue at Villa Park, and that’s that fans get anxious so quickly due to some issues at home in recent years, and hopes that Villa can find their groove in home games soon to alleviate that tension.

“For a few years, they’ve had such disastrous home form, that the fans get ever so anxious so quickly in matches,” said Townsend. “It’s an amazing place to play when they’re right behind you and it’s all going in your direction, but when it’s going the other way, it’s not easy. I’ve seen that for a few years, they’ve been really anxious at home, which is why I’d love to see them start to get a groove at Villa Park, and start to look like they’re really comfortable in their own surroundings, I think that’s massively important to them,” he added.
