Steven Gerrard has handed the Aston Villa captaincy to John McGinn, replacing Tyrone Mings, ahead of the new campaign – and both Andy Robertson and Jack Grealish were among those to react to McGinn’s Instagram post.
Mings, 29, was Villa’s captain last season after Grealish had left the club to join Manchester City. But the England defender has struggled over the last 12 months, failing to replicate the form that saw him become an England player.

The decision has been backed by Mings, stating that he is happy for McGinn to wear the armband and that there are no hard feelings. That is, despite Gabby Agbonlahor claiming that the left-footed defender might be “upset”.
A brave decision from Gerrard. Changing captains is often such a delicate matter. But from McGinn’s point of view, he is delighted to be given the armband. The Scottish ace took to Instagram over the weekend, highlighting such.
Robertson and Grealish react: McGinn handed Villa captaincy
It does seem like a good move. As aforementioned, Mings’ form of late has been questionable. It allows the ex-Ipswich defender to concentrate on his own game, while McGinn seems like the type of character to play, unaffected.
He is a leader simply with his performances. Combative, leading by example but also a game changer at times. He is well-liked by supporters and with Gerrard at the helm, a central midfielder as captain seems to be his preference.
Many players gave their response and congratulated McGinn for earning the armband – including Villa legend Grealish. Robertson, a Scotland teammate of McGinn, also gave his verdict, as did the likes of John Terry.
