Andy Reid has blasted Newcastle United forward Ayoze Perez on BBC Radio 5 Live for his protests towards the referee after having a penalty shout turned down, during The Toon’s 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest.

Aitor Karanka’s side progressed into the third round of the competition but the result could have been very different, with Perez seemingly being bundled over by Forest goalkeeper Luke Steele in the penalty area at 1-1.

Daryl Murphy, who joined Forest last summer from Newcastle, opened the scoring in the second minute before Salomon Rondon equalised in the 92nd minute. But Forest replied instantly with two injury-time goals from Matty Cash and Gil Dias.

Perez, 25, was seen frantically demonstrating with the referee after play was waved on following the incident with Steele, and ex-Sunderland and Forest man Reid has blasted the Spaniard as well as ridiculing Newcastle’s display.

“Yeah it was a penalty,” Reid said. “But I’m thinking if Perez put that much intensity into the game, in what he’s putting into to complain to the referee, then maybe they would have done a little bit better in the game.

“It was disappointing all round and they don’t deserve anything from the game. All over the pitch they were second best. They got out-worked, out-fought, and they got what they deserved out of the game which is nothing.”

Newcastle have endured an abysmal start to the 2018-19 season, picking up one point from a possible nine against Tottenham Hotspur, Cardiff City and Chelsea, and have already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup.

It is unlikely to get any better this weekend, as they travel to The Etihad to face Premier League champions Manchester City before playing host to Arsenal after that.
