Sunderland reportedly want to sign Andy Lonergan from Leeds United in the January transfer window.
Andy Lonergan has been linked with a move away from Leeds United in the January transfer window, with Championship rivals Sunderland reported to be interested in the goalkeeper.
According to The Northern Echo, Sunderland manger Chris Coleman has approached Leeds about Lonergan, with the Whites claimed to be willing to listen to offers for a permanent deal.
The 34-year-old returned to Leeds in the summer of 2017 after leaving Championship rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers at the end of the 2016-17 season.
The goalkeeper has made only seven appearances in the Championship so far this season and is the second choice behind Felix Wiedwald at Elland Road.
Lonergan is not going to get too much playing time between now and end of the season at Leeds, and from that perspective it would make sense for him to join Sunderland.
However, the Black Cats are struggling for survival in the Championship at the moment, and there is a very good chance that they will get relegated to League One at the end of the season.
Would Lonergan be happy with that? Would the former Preston North End goalkeeper be fine with playing in League One in his mid-30s?
It would make a lot more sense for Lonergan to see out the season at Leeds even if he does not play much and then make a decision on his future in the summer of 2018.
If Leeds get promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season or even if they fail to, Lonergan would have much better chances of getting decent offers than he would as a potential League One goalkeeper with Sunderland in the summer of 2018.
