Leeds United goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has been discussing the best save of his career to date, in conversation with former Leeds player Noel Whelan.

Speaking on the BBC West Yorkshire Sport show he spoke about his best save in his career, which came when he was at Preston:

“Best shot saved? I’m going way back. It wasn’t one of my best saves technically but i saved a penalty for Preston second from last game of the season.

“We beat Cardiff and we ended up getting in the play-offs by one goal.”

Leeds fans however will be interested to hear just who it was he saved the penalty from. It was a player which caused plenty of hilarity when Whelan asked him who he saved it from:

“Yeah, it was Ross McCormack.”

Of course McCormack is a player with plenty of Leeds background.

The game he is referring to was in fact a very comfortable win. Preston dealt out a 6-0 thrashing against Cardiff in April 2009, with Lonergan stopping a McCormack penalty just before half-time.

Indeed, Preston finished sixth that season, beating Cardiff by the one goal.

Leeds fans have an interesting history with McCormack. The Aston Villa striker netted 58 goals in 158 games for Leeds and was the club captain for a while, although many fans were disappointed when he decided to leave the club for Fulham in 2014.

So to hear that the Leeds second choice striker feels his best moment came against the former captain, will no doubt please fans in West Yorkshire.
