Andy Lonergan must make the most of his Leeds United chance tonight, if he starts.

From Jay-Rot Grot, to Pawel Cibicki, Leeds United fans could be treated to a more comprehensive viewing of some other summer signings tonight.

The Whites visit Burnley in a third-round League Cup clash and coach Thomas Christiansen is expected to rotate his squad in a decision which will see some fringe players get a chance to impress the 44-year-old.

Among those on the periphery of things so far is Andy Lonergan and the veteran goalkeeper will be determined to make a good first impression because early evidence suggests that Felix Wiedwald is there to be replaced.

The German keeper, a £500,000 signing from Werder Bremen, posted something of a mixed bag in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Millwall, having also given Leeds fans’ reason for concern in the 3-2 win at Bolton Wanderers on the first day of the season.

So far, he does not inspire a great deal of confidence and Lonergan, if he plays, will know that a solid showing against the Clarets tonight stands him in good stead over displacing Wiedwald if and when the 27-year-old throws up more worrying signs.

Truth is, nobody really knows whether he is up to it yet. Wiedwald has had the Championship’s best defence ahead of him all season, and if Lonergan can impress, in a game with a markedly less-proven back four in front of him, then the Leeds boss will be far less reluctant to drop Wiedwald if necessary going forward.
