Andy Lonergan has told LUTV that after working on penalties in training with Mateusz Klich, he felt for Burnley stopper Nick Pope when the Poland international stepped up during the penalty shootout between Leeds and the Clarets in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Thomas Christiansen’s men booked their place in the fourth round of the competition after knocking out the Premier League side at Turf Moor.

The game went all the way after finishing 2-2 after extra-time. And while Lonergan was able to stop one of Burnley’s penalties, Leeds converted all of their spot-kicks to put themselves in the draw for the next round – which would pit them against Leicester City.

The most notable attempt from a Leeds player surely came from Klich, who nonchalantly rolled the ball into the net before Gjanni Alioski and Stuart Dallas wrapped up the win.

And Lonergan conceded that the Burnley goalkeeper had his sympathies when he saw the summer signing stepping up for Leeds’ third kick due to what he has seen from the midfielder in training.

“I think Mateusz took one just before that [Leeds’ winning penalty],”he told LUTV.

“We’ve been practising just after training, me and him, messing about with a few of the lads. I felt for the keeper because I don’t know what [Klich] does but you can’t even dive, it’s just so controlled, and then the others were fantastic.”

The penalty kick was one of a number of moments of quality from Klich on the night, and the Leeds fans will be hoping that there are many more to come from the summer signing.
