Andy Little claims he’s heard Daniel Johnson wants to make Rangers move

Rangers continue to be linked with a move for Preston North End playmaker Daniel Johnson – though a move looks unlikely to happen this week.

The Gers were strongly linked with Johnson earlier this month, and a move seemed to be in motion when Johnson was left out of the Preston squad to face Swansea City.

Johnson is still a Preston player though, with the Championship club attempting to stand firm on their star playmaker’s future.

The 27-year-old is though out of contract at the end of the season, so Rangers may well be able to land him for nothing with a pre-contract agreement come January.

Johnson is currently out injured, but The Scottish Sun reported earlier this week that Rangers hoped to have signed up by this weekend.

That seems unlikely to happen, but Johnson’s former Preston teammate and ex-Rangers striker Andy Little has now commented on the situation.

Little has told The Scottish Sun that he has heard ‘through his contacts’ down south that Johnson wants to make the move to Rangers, which he thinks is an ‘important’ step in the deal.

Little, who played with Johnson in the 2014-15 season, branded him ‘very gifted’ and athletic, believing that he can provide quality similar to Joe Aribo in midfield.

“He’s a Steven Gerrard type of player. He’s very gifted, a good athlete and at a great point in his career,” said Little. “You look at his most notable recent signings – Hagi, Kent, Aribo – Johnson comes into the category and I have no doubt he would make an impact. I’ve heard that he’s keen to go to Rangers through my contacts down there so I think that’s very important.”

“Getting the chance to go to Ibrox doesn’t happen every day of the week and I feel he will handle playing for Rangers. In my opinion there are a lot of similarities between him and Joe Aribo – they’ve got that technical ability and the skill to find a pass. So, it will be interesting to see where Steven Gerrard plays him because he’s been using two deep-lying midfielders and playing Hagi in the No10 role since Aribo has been out. I reckon he’s just as comfortable as a number 10 as he is in the central midfield. He’s left-sided and very athletic.”
